Introducing “Beehive” A new short film by Ehran Edwards

About 6 weeks ago I hinted that I had just finished a new script. I couldn’t believe that I had been out of film school over a year, and though I had worked on so many projects, I hadn’t started my own.

I was a little slow off the starting line getting it going, but I am super thrilled to let you know that IT’S OFFICIALLY HAPPENING! ‘Beehive’ is now in Pre-production.

I have found the best team to work on this production and I am very excited about where it is heading. We plan to film in early February and right off the back of Christmas we have all been working so hard to pull it off within the 6 weeks before we shoot.

About the film.

‘Beehive’ is an exciting new Australian short film written by Cinematographer Ehran Edwards, directed by Alastair Wharton and Produced by Chloe Lawrence-Hartcher.

An emotionally repressed girl hides behind her sexuality, but when confronted with an honest reflection of her short-comings, she is pushed to admit her desire for intimacy

Colourful, alluring, sexy and vulnerable, this visually stylized, character driven film is inspired by European cinema and a love of the 1960s youth, freedom and energy.

Meet the AMAZING team

‘Beehive’ is the third collaborative effort between Alastair Wharton, Ehran Edwards, Chloe Lawrence-Hartcher and Diva Abrahamian. After meeting during the making of hit web-series ‘In Transit’, the team then went on to make a short documentary and Promo for ‘Wear It Purple’ and have joined forces again for their first short film together.

These are just the head honchos though. The film couldn’t possibly be made with just us. We are also joined by a huge team of dedicated people filling in roles such as sound, camera assist, steadicam, grip, continuity, makeup, costume, catering (very important) and editing. Once everyone is locked in I’ll let you know.

Ehran Edwards ~ Writer, Cinematographer & Executive Producer

Ehran Edwards Beehive

A graduate of The International Film School Sydney in Cinematography and The Canberra Institute of technology in Media Production, Ehran has written & directed 14 shorts and worked as cinematographer/camera operator on over 20 projects. Her music video ‘Only Only’ by Brendan Maclean was ‘Indie Clip of the Week’ on Rage 2012. Ehran is proud to have the crew on board to make her new film a success.

Alastair Wharton ~ Director

Alastair Wharton

In 2009, Alastair began his film career by studying Media Arts and Production at the University of Technology, Sydney, where he wrote and directed the short film ‘Cycles’. After finishing studying in 2011, he worked as 1st AD on the award-winning web series ‘SYD2030’. He was also the Director of the comedy web series ‘In Transit’.

Chloe Lawrence-Hartcher ~ Producer and First AD

Chloe Lawrence-Hartcher

Currently studying producing at AFTRS, Chloe spent 2012 with her thumb deeply embedded in an array of projects. From 8-part web series ‘In Transit’, futuristic short film ‘Chart Star‘ to the ‘Wear It Purple’ Promo and documentary for supporting youth, Chloe has worked wonders with her attention to detail and ability to inspire her team around her (and keep them on time.)

Diva Abrahamian ~ Production Designer

Diva Abrahamian

The stylish and marvellous Diva is lending us her midas artistic touch as Production Designer. Diva studied at The University of Technology and has worked alongside Alastair, Ehran and Chloe on various projects including ‘In Transit’, the ‘Wear It Purple Promo’ and the soon to be released music video ‘Tonight’ by Glass Towers.

Making a movie

Pre-production

For 6 weeks the team will be scouting locations, locking in gear, drawing story boards, scheduling, casting and rehearsing (including learning to dance). It’s a busy time and I am positively overwhelmed by all the hard work that everyone has put into getting the ball rolling so quickly (especially over the holiday season). We have just locked in our storyboard and are looking forward to the first meeting with the art department to discuss the visual concepts and possibilities. We currently have a call out for actors and are psyched to start the auditioning process next week.

Production

Shooting is over 3 days, the second weekend of February. It will be a tight shoot but we are working hard now to try to make it run as smooth as possible.
Filming will be in the Sydney area.

Post Production

Once the filming has wrapped, the footage then heads off to an editor, sound designer and colour grader to polish it off. After which we hope to get the final film in festivals.

It’s shaping up to be a fun film. I can’t wait to show it to you. In the mean time, I’ll keep you posted on our progress.
Wish us luck!

Wear It Purple Documentary – Giving Rainbow People A Voice

Wow, what a week. TWO productions I worked on have been launched, I’m so thrilled.

The first was the 5th episode on ‘In Transit’, a web-series which I worked on earlier in the year as a camera assist and focus puller. Check out the ‘In Transit’ episodes here.

The second is a documentary that I worked on as cinematographer for Wear It Purple this month.

Wear It Purple

Wear It Purple are an inspiring youth organisation that’s key purpose is to support GLBTIQ (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer) youth.
They exists in order to raise public awareness on the issues surrounding rainbow youth suicide. Run by students, they aim to stop the ignorance, bullying and suicides.

They have a simple message: “You have the right to be proud of who you are”.

Wear It Purple Documentary

The documentary was made in time for Mental Health month (October). It was an opportunity to promote the positive mental health of all people. This documentary aims to show rainbow young people that they are loved, respected and never alone.

I had a lot of fun working on this doco. We kept the crew to a minimum, traveled about the city and kept the coverage simple. I was impressed by the amount of video submissions we received, so many that unfortunately not all of them could be included in the final cut of the doco.

Thanks to everyone who played a part in making this documentary.

Sound Issues on set

You know that it is always a risk when you arrange to film in the city. In general, Sydney is a terrible place to film because if you aren’t under a flight path there’s traffic, construction, music – regardless what it is, it will ruin the sound you are trying to record or at the very least delay your shoot while you wait for the guy with the leaf blower to stop.

Yesterday was no different.

A small team of 3, Chloe Lawrence-Hartcher – Producer, Alastair Wharton – director and myself – director of photography,  headed out to Martin Place in Sydney City to film a few cutaways for the new Wear It Purple documentary we were working on which will be released shortly for Mental Health month.

When we arrived we discovered hundreds of people swarming a newly erected stage. Martin Place was packed. People were trying to peek at what was going on. We soon realised that new international sensation Psy was doing a performance of his hit ‘Gangnam Style‘.

So we set up to do our shots which thankfully didn’t have any dialogue. But each time we attempted to get atoms we couldn’t avoid the screams and pulsing beat of Gangnam Style.

We had a look around to see hundreds of people doing the famous Gangnam dace steps. Never have I seen anything like it.

This morning I found a clip from his performance yesterday which was for Channel 7s “Sunrise’. Check out to see what we were up against.

Wear It Purple Promo 2012

Wear It Purple‘ is an inspiring youth organisation thats key purpose is to support GLBTIQ (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer) youth.
Wear It Purple exists in order to raise public awareness on the issues surrounding rainbow youth suicide. They are run by high school and university students and work to stop ignorance, bullying and suicide. They have a simple message: “You have the right to be proud of who you are”.

Every year on “Wear it Purple Day”, They ask people everywhere to wear purple to school, university, work, or other public venues to help raise this consciousness.

I was recently involved in making a promotional video for ‘Wear It Purple’. The video, supported by the NSW Police Force and The Board of Education, is a short film to promote Wear It Purple’s message. The video will be shown in schools, public events and Wear It Purple related events.

I worked with a fantastic team of people who all volunteered their time to help create the best video they could for this important group of people. A whole range of people became involved, including high school students, Wear it Purple, The NSW Police force, Filmmakers, actors (including the talented Brenna Harding from Channel Tens ‘Puberty Blues‘), parents, Sydney band Polar Knights and the board of education. Together it was our goal to create a video which would appeal to youth in a fresh new way and carry the message to youth.

For more information about this organisation or resources please see their website here: http://wearitpurple.org/

Wear It Purple day is September 7 2012.

IDAHO 2012 Documentary Trailer

Here is a short trailer for the IDAHO 2012 documentary that I worked on. The Full length documentary will be released shortly.

IDAHO (International Day AGAINST Homophobia) 2012 was celebrated at Parramatta Town Hall on the 6th of May.
The event was hosted by Bump productions and documented by Lantern House Films.

The day consisted of a spectacular performance by the ‘Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir‘ as well as presentations and speeches by PFLAG (Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), ‘Wear it Purple‘ and the NSW Police force.

It was a wonderful day to witness. I feel very privileged to have heard the personal accounts of parents as well as being amongst the audience during the emotional choir performance.
