One Week In

My first week of being a full time freelancer has been an interesting one. Aside from the challenge of working from home when I don’t have a job booked and not getting sucked into pottering around the house I have found it both intimidating and exciting.

Martin Williams on set of “Walter”

Amazingly I have achieved a lot. This week I got on board my first feature film as Director of Photography. The film “You Said Something” is written by Martin Williams who will be directing and acting the lead role in the film. Martin and I have worked together on a number of short films over the years including shooting the promotional films for his last feature “The Margin of Things”.
I am so thrilled at the opportunity to shoot a feature and am excited about the style and framework we are aiming at filming it within.

Ted Crosby as “Walter”

I also met up with Director Andrew Bennett to discuss the post production of a short film, “Walter“, which we worked on a few years ago (where I actually met Martin Williams) to try and get it out to festivals as I think it really is a gorgeous little film.

With all the creative juices flowing this week with the talk of a new film and finishing up another I was inspired to start writing my very first feature film script. I’ve had the idea for awhile and was so thrilled to have made a start. I managed to knock out the first 30 pages and am keen to get a first draft finished soon. I’ll let you know how I go.

Through the viewfinder, on set this week

I also worked on a few shoots as a camera operator and it was great to reconnect with some familiar faces and to make new connections.

So it’s been a very busy week!

On the other hand having a blank calendar, free from routine part time shifts and sitting at home makes me wonder what am I doing? How am I going?
It’s easy to become worried that time is passing by, after all I finished film school 4 years ago and I’m just sitting at my desk in my bedroom rather than shooting that amazing European style-out of this world feature I’ve dreamt of all my life…..

el_ojo_que_todo_lo_ve_838602060_480xI was sent this link today. It’s an article about Director of Photography Javier Aguirresarobe (Blue Jasmine, Vicki Christina Barcelona, The Twilight Saga) and his journey to success.
The article was a little reminder that all good things come in time and that I needn’t worry about how much time is passing.
On a side note I particularly liked how he said “when the story moves you, it motivates you to add your own personality to the images.”

So though I might currently be sipping a cup of Lady Grey tea and at my computer I’m actually incredibly busy and should probably appreciate the down time more as it gives me a chance to write, regroup and read up about the world of cinematography and all the exciting tools out there.

Yesterday I wrote my first gig review EVER. I had just seen Brendan Maclean play the final show of his ‘Stupid’ tour which was launching his new single ‘Stupid’. The song is super catchy and the show was amazing. You can check both the song and review here.
If you like it you can download ‘Stupid’ here.

As promised I wanted to share with you some photos I took of the evening as it has been quite a while since I did any gig photography as, to be honest, I wasn’t spending as much time enjoying the show with my friends. So this time I split my time in half. I picked my songs that I would snap and joined my friends for the others so overall I still was able to thoroughly enjoy the fantastic show that it was. (See live photography of Brendan Maclean that I’ve taken here – Live Performance photography portfolio)

For those interested in camera specs, I shot on a Canon 5D Mark II with a 24-105 f4 lens. So as you can imagine, it was difficult with low light to really get great photos without too much motion blur or grain. So I opted for moments and hope you enjoy seeing some of the moments from the night.

Miss Little opened the show with her two lovely ladies Elana Stone and Katie Whiton. Brendan Maclean was joined by his band, Andrew Bennett, Lee Carey and Andy Nicholls with special guest Annaliese Szota

So, without any further ado, I give you my photos from Brendan Macleans ‘Stupid’ tour, live from The Factory Theatre.
For more photos from the evening, be sure to check out the album on my Facebook page Ehran Edwards.

Sneak Peek – Brendan Maclean ‘Stupid’ Tour

Brendan MacleanFor those who have been following for a while, you may have noticed that I have a lot of live gigs photography from Brendan Maclean; Musician, Triple J presenter and actor who also recently got a major role in Baz Luhmans ‘The Great Gatsby‘.

My boyfriend, Andrew Bennett is a guitarist in his band and so I have had the pleasure of seeing him perform a lot over the last 2 years (Check out my live gigs photo album to see past shows). We even had the joy of making a music video, directed by Andrew and filmed by myself for Brendans single ‘Only Only’ (See below)

Last Friday, after touring Brisbane and Melbourne, Brendan brought his ‘Stupid’ tour (named after his recent single ‘Stupid’ from his upcoming album) to Sydneys Factory Theatre in Marrickville. The audience was packed like sardines and was a keen bunch of fans, many of whom had seen Brendan before and had supported him in his recent crowd funding campaign to make his new album. So the room was filled with energy and excitement.

Miss LittleMiss Little opened the show with her new collection of songs, supported by Elana Stone and Katie Whiton. Her angelic and powerful voice pierced the silence of the entranced audience. The morbid and dramatic nature of her new collection of songs keep you hanging on every word as you lap up the beautifully detailed stories. This was the third time I had seen Miss Little and her band and I must say I was no less captivated by her emotional performance, I can’t wait to see her again.

Brendan then burst onto the stage wearing a loud navy blue suit and erupted into his opening number surrounded by his band, Andy Nicholls (violin), Lee Carey (drums) and Andrew Bennett (electric guitar). The audience cheered him on, song after song, burst into laughter at his every joke and loudly welcomed his ukelele ‘Murphy Brown’ to stage upon cue. Brendans set was dynamic, from crowd pleasing rock pop numbers, to intimate solo moments including a stunning duet with Miss Little called ‘Just Growing Up’.

The time came for Brendan to officially launch his new single ‘Stupid’ in Sydney. Brendan proudly introduced the number by declaring his joy that the new music video for the song has received over 80,000 views it’s first week, the first of Brendans videos to receive more views than his cover of Rebecca Blacks ‘Friday’ (Click here to watch his cover) (a fact that made him very very happy.) Brendan was then joined by sydney musician Annaliese Szota, who leant her amazing dancing talents (as seen in Brendans cover of ‘Friday’) to the performance. It was a showstopper!

The band returned to the stage to bring the house down, building to the final song ‘Winner’, a song to celebrate Brendan reaching his crowd funding goal to make an album.

Everyone was psyched and left wanting more. Brendan delivered with a classic from his first EP ‘White Canvas’.

Overall it was a night to remember. I was squirming in my seat, just itching to dance. Having seen so many of his performances, I was still blown away by the music and the chemistry of the evening. There was just something in the air.

I’ll soon be releasing some stills from the night very soon, but in the mean time here is a small sample.

The Margin Of Things Pozible Campaign

The Margin Of Things

Hey everyone,

Well you may recall a few weeks back I shared a sampler of a new feature film, ‘The Margin Of Things’ that I am working on. (If not – check out deets here)

Well, I’m very excited to announce that it is now time for us to bring our film to life. So today the team launched their new Pozible campaign to try and raise the much-needed funds to make this movie.

I am part of a collection of around 40 very talented people who are collaborating to make this great new Sydney-based Crime/Comedy feature film which will be shot in February/March. (Expect me to be a little frazzled around this time as I will also me shooting my short film ‘Beehive’)

The new Pozible campaign is designed to ‘Crowd Fund’ the film. It’s a great way for people to get on board projects like ours and contribute – but – with that contribution being rewarded with tangable gifts, such as copies of the film, th CD soundtrack, the script, tickets to the premiere etc, etc.

You can choose how much you contribute to us, and you can also track how we are travelling in terms of reaching our goal. It is excitig times for us as a group, and we are over the moon to be in this position.

Ehran Edwards DOP and director Andrew Bennett on set TMOT samplerAs I mentioned, our campaign went live today. It will go for 21 days. We need to raise $8000 to make the film as a bare minimum, of course any more than that will add to the production value and help make it an even better success. Every little bit helps.

The campaign is located on the POZIBLE site:

We are aiming quite high, but we are extremely confident in our abilities
to make a very good film, and I’m sure you be proud of what we make.

The Margin Of Things Sampler #1

The Margin of Things slateIt’s insane that I haven’t yet shared this particular project with you yet, I’m so excited!

I recently signed on to work as First Assistant camera for a new independent feature film, “The Margin Of Things”, which follows “Two friends in desperate need of change in their lives who decide to do something drastic about their situation – and when they do, things go from bad to worse in a heartbeat.”

Prior to shooting the feature, I was asked to film two samplers which are to be used to showcase the upcoming film as well as assist in the crowd funding campaign which will be launched after Christmas.

‘The Margin Of Things’ film

‘The Margin of Things’ is an exciting new Australian film by WIST Media. Directed by Andrew Bennett and written by Martin Williams, the character-driven film has a fresh new take on the crime/comedy genre and looks to be a fantastic direction after it’s success as a play on the Sydney stage.

The film follows Bryan (played by Paul-William Mahwinney) who is struggling to make ends meet after inheriting his father debt after his passing. Bryan, who lives on the straight and narrow, is thrown a quick-fix opportunity by best mate Mark (Martin Williams). Bryan spills the plan to his friend Joe (Radek Jonak), a newly released ex-con, who wants in. The unlikely trio set out one night to put their plan in action.

The Margin Of Things is currently in Pre-production. The shoot commences February 2013.

The Samplers

On set still. Ehran Edwards shadow as she sets up a shot of Joe (Radek Jonak)In the lead up to the shoot, ‘The Margin Of things’ team decided to make 2 samplers to give people an insight into the film to help with marketing and crowd funding.

At the last-minute I was asked to step in as cinematographer for the two samplers. It was a big job prepping everything in just 2 weeks, but in the end (though ridiculously exhausted) we pulled it all together and had a very successful shoot.

We shot them back to back mid November. The team was a joy to work with. We had 3 packed days to get everything done and the crew all worked very hard to get it done.  It was especially wonderful to join a crew at the last-minute and for them to be so welcoming and open to my ideas and needs.

I am so grateful to have had such a supportive crew around me and am extremely thankful to everyone who helped me out with gear and on set. It wouldn’t be the same without your help. Thank you so much.

Sampler #1 – Bryan and Mark

The first sampler was released today.

Hours before Bryan and Mark set out to put their plan in action they discuss the fine details. They are soon interrupted and realise that it may not be as simple as they had hoped.

Wear It Purple Promo 2012

Wear It Purple‘ is an inspiring youth organisation thats key purpose is to support GLBTIQ (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer) youth.
Wear It Purple exists in order to raise public awareness on the issues surrounding rainbow youth suicide. They are run by high school and university students and work to stop ignorance, bullying and suicide. They have a simple message: “You have the right to be proud of who you are”.

Every year on “Wear it Purple Day”, They ask people everywhere to wear purple to school, university, work, or other public venues to help raise this consciousness.

I was recently involved in making a promotional video for ‘Wear It Purple’. The video, supported by the NSW Police Force and The Board of Education, is a short film to promote Wear It Purple’s message. The video will be shown in schools, public events and Wear It Purple related events.

I worked with a fantastic team of people who all volunteered their time to help create the best video they could for this important group of people. A whole range of people became involved, including high school students, Wear it Purple, The NSW Police force, Filmmakers, actors (including the talented Brenna Harding from Channel Tens ‘Puberty Blues‘), parents, Sydney band Polar Knights and the board of education. Together it was our goal to create a video which would appeal to youth in a fresh new way and carry the message to youth.

For more information about this organisation or resources please see their website here: http://wearitpurple.org/

Wear It Purple day is September 7 2012.

Brendan Maclean and The Fabergettes at FBi Social

Last night I went to FBi Radios social night to watch Brendan Maclean and his band play. I also had the pleasure of watching The Fabergettes, a 60s inspired sounds-like-garage band,  for the first time.

Here are some pics from the evening.
