Puberty Blues

A friend of mine shared this blog post about Puberty Blues with me and I found it absolutely fascinating. Thanks Chloe!

Written by the cinematographer for the show; John Brawley goes to great length explaining how they created the look for the show, without making the trendy 70’s period the focus as audiences were going to connect with that anyway.   Brawley takes us through their camera choices and how they combatted the consistency of digital cameras by interesting lens choices. How they tried to free up the actors movement by not locking them into specific marks, the decision to cross shoot many scenes and film from close ups and then going wide with the coverage.

*A WORD OF WARNING – There are many plot spoilers in this article about the TV series Puberty Blues as well as clips from the show that contain some slightly confronting material

LATE BREAKING NEWS>  Puberty Blues has just won the AACTA award for Best Television Drama.  This is Australian Televisions’ highest award and is just recognition for this outstanding drama series.

– Network Promo for Puberty Blues.

Puberty Blues is an iconic Australian book that based on a witheringly brutal and honest account of two best friends growing up in the misogynistic surf culture of Cronulla  (aka the shire) during the 1970’s.
A semi-autobiographical book by Kathy Lette and Gabriele Carey, it was made into a popular film directed by Bruce Baresford of the same title that was released in 1981.

Wear It Purple Promo 2012

Wear It Purple‘ is an inspiring youth organisation thats key purpose is to support GLBTIQ (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer) youth.
Wear It Purple exists in order to raise public awareness on the issues surrounding rainbow youth suicide. They are run by high school and university students and work to stop ignorance, bullying and suicide. They have a simple message: “You have the right to be proud of who you are”.

Every year on “Wear it Purple Day”, They ask people everywhere to wear purple to school, university, work, or other public venues to help raise this consciousness.

I was recently involved in making a promotional video for ‘Wear It Purple’. The video, supported by the NSW Police Force and The Board of Education, is a short film to promote Wear It Purple’s message. The video will be shown in schools, public events and Wear It Purple related events.

I worked with a fantastic team of people who all volunteered their time to help create the best video they could for this important group of people. A whole range of people became involved, including high school students, Wear it Purple, The NSW Police force, Filmmakers, actors (including the talented Brenna Harding from Channel Tens ‘Puberty Blues‘), parents, Sydney band Polar Knights and the board of education. Together it was our goal to create a video which would appeal to youth in a fresh new way and carry the message to youth.

For more information about this organisation or resources please see their website here: http://wearitpurple.org/

Wear It Purple day is September 7 2012.
