Quote for the Day #11 – Risky Casting with Sam Mendes

After months of hard work writing the script, getting a team together and surviving the holiday season lull in the early stages of pre, we are finally here.
Today is the first day of auditions for ‘Beehive’.

I woke up this morning with an excited little feeling in tummy. I am so excited to see what amazing talent we have come through our door. But not only that, It will be the first time I heard my script read aloud by actual actors (I highly recommend writers hear other people read their scripts aloud. It helps you pick up on what needs more work very quickly.)

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprioIn the theme of the day I found this wonderful quote by Sam Mendes, director of American Beauty (Academy Award for Best Director ’98), Road To Perdition, Revolutionary Road and recently James Bonds ‘Skyfall‘.

Mendes has worked with some of the best in the business, one of his biggest standout moments was when he cast his own wife, Kate Winslet, in Revolutionary Road. The film required him to direct Winslet alongside Leonardo DiCaprio (former co-star in Titanic) which involved passionate sex scenes. A challenge for any person I’m sure!

Winslet told how she felt awkward being directed by her husband – particularly during sex scenes. She said last year: ‘I just kept saying, “This is too weird”. Leo told me to get over it, but I said, “You’re my best friend and he’s my husband. This is definitely a bit weird”.’

So I thought, who better to comment on casting then Mendes. A man who directed his own wife making love to Leonardo DiCaprio.

“It’s a risk casting anyone against type or what they’re known to do. But there’s one thing better than having a great actor, which is having a great actor who’s never done what you’re asking him to do. He’s hungry to get out of the trailer every day and hungry to test himself.”

– Sam Mendes

Winslet went on to win an Oscar for Best Actress for Revolutionary Road. The film was also nominated for Best Director, Best Motion Picture and Best Supporting Actor.
Mendes and Winslet are now divorced.
